Geert Dom studied medicine at the University of Antwerp (Belgium) where he also finished his training in neuropsychiatry in 1989.
From 1991 until now he is working at the Psychiatric Centre Alexian Brothers, Boechout, Belgium, where he is head of the addiction treatment department. In addition he is a consultant to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology department of the Antwerp University Hospital (UZA).

Geert Dom has specialised in addiction psychiatry and has developed a specific interest in co-morbidity and the neurocognitive aspects of addictive disorders. At the moment he holds the chair of "Advanced Research in Addiction Medicine & Psychiatry (ARAM&P) at the Antwerp Ubiversity, Belgium, and teaches on addiction and psychiatry at the Master in Addiction Science program, Radboud University, The Netherlands.

In addition to his clinical and academic work he is at the moment the President of the Belgian Professional Association of Psychiatry and the Vice-President of the flemish Psychiatry Association.
